Use these tips to help you decide what to wear in your upcoming session. Unless your session is a mini, feel free to bring more than one set of clothing options.
1. Coordinating colors not matching.
The trend used to be everyone wearing a white shirt and matching, but no more. Instead, pick a couple of colors and choose clothes that will fit in this color scheme.
2. Look at your home decor.
Keep in mind the color scheme of your home, after all you will be decorating with your portraits. Make it match with vivid colors or neutral mid tones, what ever your style is.
Accessories are not only stylish they can become fun photo props! Wear a tie and tug on it playfully in a shot. High heels and jewelry for the little ones to play with or hats to add and element of peek a boo.
4. Pattern Power.
Patterns look great on one person, but can be overwhelming with more than one and the subjects get lost to the pattern. Find that have to pattern and use it as the anchor to base everyone’s outfit around. This can work with bright colors too!
5. Say no to characters.
Yes, your little one may love their Iron Man shirt but you may want to skip it for the family photo session. Just like patterns, characters on shirts can be pretty distracting.
6. Avoid all white or all black clothing.
All white clothing is very easy to blow out parts of your clothing causing it to lose it’s detail. Same can be said with all black. Unless asked for this color – newborn shots come to mind – try to have other options.
Add textures with scarves or belts to add a little more to the image. Clothing with texture is always a great detail, whether it be lace or embellished fabric.
8. Consider the location.
Keep in mind where we will be shooting. Make sure your clothing style fits the location style.
9. Consider the season.
If you are ahead of the crowd and taking Holiday photos in the summer, keep in mind when you are using the photos and plan you wardrobe accordingly. If it is cold, think layers!
10. Think timeless.
These photos will be hanging on your walls and treasured for years to come. Choose what you want represented of your family now.
